What Makes Professional Whitening Different
The active ingredient in whitening products — hydrogen peroxide — is the same whether you buy it at the pharmacy or receive it at a dental office. The difference is concentration and application. OTC strips and gels contain 3–10% hydrogen peroxide. Professional in-office whitening uses 25–40%. More concentration means faster results, more complete coverage, and the ability to address deeper staining that consumer products can't reach.
The Key Advantages
- ·Faster results: significant whitening in a single appointment vs. weeks of at-home use
- ·More uniform coverage: custom-fitted trays ensure gel reaches every surface evenly
- ·Professionally managed: your dentist monitors for sensitivity and adjusts exposure accordingly
- ·Can address intrinsic staining from aging and certain medications that OTC products can't touch
- ·Take-home trays from your dentist maintain results between visits better than store-bought alternatives
The Zoom Whitening Process
We use Zoom Whitening, one of the more advanced in-office systems available. After applying a protective gel to your gums, we coat your teeth with professional-grade whitening gel and activate it with a specialized light. The full appointment takes about an hour and delivers multiple shades of improvement in a single visit. Patients leave with noticeably whiter teeth and custom take-home trays for maintenance.
What Whitening Can and Can't Fix
Professional whitening is highly effective for extrinsic staining — the kind caused by coffee, tea, wine, smoking, and normal aging. It's less effective for intrinsic discoloration from tetracycline antibiotics or fluorosis, which may require veneers or bonding for best results. Whitening also doesn't change the color of crowns, veneers, or bonding — if you have visible restorations, Dr. Jain will discuss how to achieve a cohesive result.
If you've been curious about whitening, the honest answer is: professional treatment is worth it if you want meaningful, lasting results. We're happy to evaluate whether you're a good candidate at your next visit.
